This is an excellent opportunity to build a career with the City and County of Denver. The Public Works Department has multiple vacancies in its Operations Divisions. These vacancies may be located in multiple locations within the following divisions: Fleet Management, Solid Waste Management, Street Maintenance, Transportation & Mobility, Wastewater Management Operations and Construction sections.

About Our Job

·         Performs semi-skilled and light to heavy physical labor on a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair projects that involves physical exertion and the operation of light weight motorized equipment and hand and power tools.

·         Operates construction equipment such as jack-hammers, air spades, shovels, rotors, metal detectors, and air drills and hand digs, excavates, shores, grades, and backfills trenches.

·         Operates light weight equipment powered by small engines for maintenance and minor construction projects and patches asphalt and paved areas.

·         Breaks out cement, digs out areas for new cement bases, mixes and pours cement for traffic control boxes, signal light poles, and pull boxes, and installs plastic PVC or metal piping in bases for traffic signal wiring.

·         Lifts and empties heavy solid waste containers into disposal trucks, operates hydraulic compaction unit on city trash collection vehicles, and washes trucks as needed.

·         Places and removes barricades, cones, and other traffic control and safety devices in and around work areas for construction and maintenance projects in accordance of with traffic regulation requirements. 

·         Observes all common safety practices associated with small engines and hand and power tool equipment operations.

·         Assists in training and checking the work of other employees on various projects.

·         Operates vehicles at a higher level of complexity on the equipment operation list and in that capacity performs pre-trip inspections on equipment for such things as fluid levels, leaks, condition of hoses and belts, tire pressure, brake lights, and related areas, secure, clean and care for all basic tools and equipment needed for job assignments, and drives vehicle to various job sites.

·         By position, performs seasonal street maintenance duties such as snow plowing, salting and sanding, removing snow and ice from sidewalks, steps, seats, ramps, and parking lots and hauls ice and snow away by truck. 

By Public Works Division:

·         Fleet Management 

o    Dedicated to Solid Waste trash trucks. First shift, Central Platte location.  

o    Training program provided.  

o    CDL B preferred 

·         Solid Waste Management 

o    Primary responsibility is laborer performing trash/recycling/barrel overflow/ large item pickup collection. Can perform as backup or rotational driver. May be assigned to graffiti abatement, electronic waster or dead animal collection.  

o    We train to promote to Equipment Operator positions.  

o    CDL B preferred 

o    Participate in the snow removal program. 

·         Street Maintenance 

o    Standard job assignments may include any or all of the following:  raking, shoveling, grade control, asphalt plant maintenance, manhole adjustments, pothole preparation and repair, the use of various hand/power tools, flagging, setting traffic control devices, guiding trucks, median maintenance, flyer distribution, pedestrian bridge maintenance, and job site maintenance. 

o    Must have CDL B and Tanker endorsement by the end of probation.  

o    Participate in the snow removal program.  

·         Transportation & Mobility 

o    Primary responsibility is laborer for installation, construction, maintenance, and repair of traffic control signs and pavement markings. 

o    We train to promote Traffic Operations positions.  

o    CDL B preferred, along with experience in general construction 

o    Participate in the snow removal program. 

·         Wastewater Management Construction 

o    Responsible for the building and repairing the City's storm and sanitary sewer system. You will assist with general labor, safety and related work tasks on a crew with Equipment Operators.  

o    CDL B preferred 

o    Participate in the snow removal program. 

·         Wastewater Management Systems Maintenance 

o    Helps the Equipment Operator Specialist as part of a two-man crew in maintaining the City's sanitary and storm sewer systems. The position learns all phases of the maintenance operations, along with how to operate all equipment associated with those duties. 

o    Participate in the snow removal program.

One year of experience performing unskilled labor work.
Licensure and/or Certification:
By position, requires a Class-B Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.
By position, requires a valid driver's license. 
License(s) must be kept current as a condition of employment.
